An Artist is Blooming: My Journey to Being a Creative

An Artist is Blooming: My Journey to Being a Creative

I did a thing today. I took another step in my creative journey. Well, my journey back to creativity. I spent years creating a life of stability, something I know stems from my childhood. My mother has a mental illness and could not raise me and my father was absent so my grandparents raised me. My grandfather died suddenly from a heart attack on a Sunday night. I was nine. Four years later, my grandmother was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease and lost our family home to foreclosure. We had to move and my grandmother needed a caregiver.

I needed stability and I set out on a quest to create it. Along the way, I’d make time to sing or write, but something in me (fear) made me pursue the traditional form of creating security. I became an educator and absolutely love it, but my fear and belief that this was the only way to reach my goal, kept me stifled.

Why couldn’t I do both? Like really do it all. This question started coming up in mind over the past few years and I finally answered it. I could. And, I am.

An artist is blooming and I am so ecstatic about it because that artist is me. It’s been a journey with lots of ups and downs (growing pains), but it’s worth it because I am finally embracing the creative in me in a way that I’ve never done in my life.

I talked to my therapist about it and the first thing she told me to do was to envision her. How does she look? What is she like? What parts of her personality does she share with the world? So, I started journaling. Creative Dareise is bohemian, with visible tattoos (that’s the thing I did today) and an eclectic style. She was bold with her gifts of singing, writing and storytelling. And, she was brave. She was afraid to do things, but she did the shit anyway. She was clear that her gifts were not just meant to fulfill her soul but to also share with the world to inspire others.

And, guess what, with taking this journey to live my creative dreams, I am inspiring myself and showing up to the world better because I’ve finally embraced all of me.
